En Dash (–)

Use an en dash to indicate a range of numbers when it is not practical to spell out the range in words.

Spell out non-numeric ranges, such as "May through October."

Do not use spaces or substitute a hyphen, em dash, minus sign, or other character. The en dash is more accessible for screen readers and is usually read as "to."

The keyboard hyphen key does not enter an en dash. To enter an en dash:

  • Windows: Search for en dash in the Character Map.
  • MacOS: Search for en dash in the Emoji and Symbols panel.
  • XML/HTML: –
