As we create text-based assets, readability should focus on the following:
- Use language the audience is familiar with.
- Use simple words wherever possible.
- Prefer shorter words with fewer syllables.
- Avoid abbreviations and acronyms unless they are very well understood by your audience. Spell out acronyms on first use.
- Avoid jargon and internal language.
- Use consistent language and definitions like those laid out in Word Choice.
- Keep sentences short.
- Use active voice where possible, especially in directions.
- Passive voice can be used to avoid personifying the application.
- Passive voice can be used to avoid blaming the user.
- Organize information for improved usability and scannability.
- Start with key points and follow with supplemental information as needed.
- Break up long paragraphs.
- Use lists.
- Use subheadings.
