Callouts should be avoided wherever possible. Images should generally be cropped to a specific portion of UI and sufficiently understood by the user through context.
When you do use callouts, implement them in an authoring app, not in the image file. This allows for reuse of the callouts if they are still applicable after a UI change.
Don't use drop shadows for callouts or image borders.
